Both players can win this match if they are at their best, but only one will make their way to the Round of 32 of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. Who will it be?
Jordan Thompson had to fight off a potential comeback victory from Casper Ruud. Thompson was 2-0 up against Ruud and then Ruud fought his way back to 2-2. However, in the 5th set, Ruud stopped performing well and then an issue with his finger was bothering him so he was not hitting as clean as we expect from him. This gave Jordan Thompson a lifeline and he was able to see off the match in 5 sets 7-6/7-6/2-6/2-6/6-2. Jordan will be happy he came through that, but he will need to be much better if he is to beat the very experienced and in form Kei Nishikori.
Kei Nishikori cruised through his opening round match, beating the tough Alexei Popyrin in straight sets 6-4/6-4/6-4. This was a very good win for Kei, who more often than not ends up playing 4 or 5 setters when we all know he could get them done in straight sets. Kei Nishikori will be confident in his game on grass after that performance, and he will want to get a couple more of them under hie belt as he aims to find his best tennis. However, he meets an opponent who was able to cause an upset in the Round of 128 in Jordan Thompson and he will want to prevent the same from happening here.
Kei Nishikori and Jordan Thompson have met 1 time before, with Kei Nishikori leading the head to head 1-0. They met in 2017 in Brisbane and Kei Dominated in straight sets 6-1/6-1. I don’t expect as dominant of a performance from Kei here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, but I still expect him to win. Jordan Thompson will be feeling confident from his opening round win, so that momentum might allow him to steal a set. However, at the end of the day, Nishikori will win and make his way to the Round of 32 of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
