Will Tereza Martincova pull off the stunner? Will Pliskova continue her dominance? Friday’s match will be a good one to see if Pliskova is a real contender for the title. Who will move on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships?
Tereza Martincova is coming into this match as a surprise contender for it. She took out a seed en route to the Round of 32. She’s been serving quite well, although did get pretty lucky at some moments. I think she has a very low chance of going through such a quality opponent like Karolina though, while her service numbers were good, they weren’t good enough to ever push her next opponent. Also, her break point conversion rates were Federer-like, which is not a good thing, against a stronger opponent, she’ll get a lot fewer break opportunities, so I really don’t see her doing super well in this match based on those two stats alone. It’ll be hard for her, and she’ll need to really improve her mindset and first serve to be able to stand a chance come Friday.
Karolina Pliskova comes into this match with loads of confidence, being one of the most in-form players at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. While I do expect her to roll past Martincova, there are of course some concerns, in her first match, she did a brilliant job converging on the few opportunities she had, converting 3/3 break points. However, in her last match, she only managed to convert 4/11. For me, this raises some mental red flags, she needs to brush off any doubts she has, and go straight for what she wants in the match, while I expect her to win even on an average or a little below average day, she’ll need to try to convert on every single opportunity instantly, as that’s what she’ll need to do in the latter stages assuming she makes it there.
Tereza Martincova and Karolina Pliskova have never met before, this being their first career meeting. Even if they did meet before, it wouldn’t really be indicative of all of who would be the winner tomorrow. Pliskova is the heavy favorite to move on and will remain so, the only way I see her losing is if she has a very bad day at the office, and Martincova steps up and takes advantage of the situation. I expect Karolina to roll past Tereza in two relatively easy sets and take her place in the Round of 16 at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
