Federico Gaio cruised through his First Round match, beating the experienced Frenchman Benoit Paire in straight sets 7-5/6-3. Federico Gaio won this match because Benoit Paire has really just given up on his tennis career in the last few months. Benoit Paire now just focuses on showing up to tournaments, picking up his paycheck, and losing in an early round. Federico Gaio will be confident in his game after the victory, but he has to give himself a reality check as he will now meet a player who will destroy anyone who shows up a little bit off their game. Will Gaio be able to cause the shocking upset against Andrey Rublev?
Andrey Rublev will want to bounce back here at the 2021 Barcelona Open after losing the Final of the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters last week 3-6/3-6 against Stefanos Tsitsipas. Andrey Rublev was absolutely perfect all week, and was just in control of matches against the likes of Rafael Nadal, but he showed up to the Final a bit to error prone and he was not able to keep up with Tsitsipas that day. Andrey is still going to be happy with his performances that week, and he will want to keep playing at this very high level and get some big victories under his belt on the clay.
Andrey Rublev and Federico Gaio have never met before, and this is going to be their first meeting on the ATP Tour. Unfortunately for Federico Gaio this is going to be an absolute destruction by Andrey Rublev. Gaio has not got the required level to compete with the likes of the world Top 10, and he was only lucky to reach the Second Round as he met Benoit Paire, and my grandmother could beat Paire at this moment in time. I don’t expect this to be a long match at all.
