TennisSection previews the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters as Novak Djokovic (1) meets Jannik Sinner in the Second Round on Wednesday April 14th, 2021.
A huge battle is expected as world number one Novak Djokovic faces Jannik Sinner in the Second Round of the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters. This is one match that tennis fans will not want to miss as this is a class encounter between present and future superstars. The Serbian is one of the best players in history but arrives in Monaco short of match practice. Can the young Italian prodigy continue his fantastic form and cause the stunning upset?
Novak Djokovic is a tennis legend and will go down as one of the best to ever play the game. He has won numerous clay-court titles and is considered one of the top contenders at every event that he plays. However, he is likely to be up against it here as he arrives in Monaco having not played a competitive match since the Australian Open and would have been hoping for a relatively easy draw. Unfortunately that has not been the case as he has been drawn against the young Italian star Jannik Sinner, who is riding high after reaching the Miami Masters-1000 Final recently and is in supreme form. If there is a silver lining for Djokovic it is that Sinner has also not played a clay court event for the year. Djokovic enters this match as the firm favorite to advance here at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Open.
Jannik Sinner is currently ranked a career high #22 in the ATP world rankings and has seen a stunning rise up the ranks in recent times. Considered by many to be a future world #1, he has exceeded expectations by claiming two ATP titles, reaching an ATP-1000 Final in Miami and being within touching distance of the top 20 at 19 years old. He is in superb form after the Miami, but it remains to be seen if fatigue will be an issue and how he adapts to the clay. The young Italian enters this match as the underdog but certainly has the explosive game to trouble the world number one Novak Djokovic, especially if the Serbian is short of match practice. He was impressive in his 6-3, 6-4 First Round win over Albert Ramos-Vinolas and will be confident heading into this match here at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters.
This is the first time that the two players will face each other on the ATP Tour and their head to head record stands at 0-0. It really is a shame that they are playing so early in the tournament as this match is worthy of a Semi-Final or even a Final. It is tough to predict a winner here due to the fact that Djokovic has not played on clay since the 2020 French Open, and Jannik Sinner is in such tremendous form. All things considered though, it is never a good idea to go against the Serbian superstar. He has an uncanny knack for winning matches, even when not nearly at his best and this should be treated no differently. This is surely the first of many battles between the two and Sinner is knocking on the door, but is not quite ready for sure a big win yet. Expect a very exciting match here at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters, but Novak Djokovic will come out on top and advance to the Round of 16 in two tough sets.
