TennisSection previews the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters as Grigor Dimitrov (14) meets Jan-Lennard Struff in the First Round on Monday, April 12th 2021.
Will Jan-Lennard Struff be able to bounce back after a tough loss last week at the 2021 Sardegna Open as he looks to cause the upset here in the First Round? Will Grigor Dimitrov show us his amazing tennis which has made him into one of the most entertaining players to watch on the ATP Tour? Both players can dominate this match if they are on top of their game, but only one will make their way to the Second Round. Who will it be?
Jan-Lennard Struff will be looking to bounce back after losing in Quarter-finals of the 2021 Sardegna Open in 3 tight sets to Nikoloz Basilashvili. Struff entered the match with many expecting him to come out on top as he is a great mover around clay courts, and he has a massive serve. However, he was put on the back foot right from the start, and he was just never able to get himself back in front in the match. Struff will want to improve from that, but he will now meet an extremely tough opponent in Grigor Dimitrov in the First Round of the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters. How will the big swinging German fare here?
Grigor Dimitrov loves a big tournament on clay, especially as he lives here in Monte-Carlo and trains on these courts a lot. Dimitrov had a good start to the season, making the Quarter-finals at the Australian Open and at the Acapulco Open. The Bulgarian will definitely come out here filled with confidence as he is back on his favourite surface, at home, and he will know that he is meeting an opponent who will be low in confidence in Jan-Lennard Struff. Dimitrov has some of the best tennis skills out there when he is on top of his game, but he will have to ensure he can be consistent this week if he wants to go far here at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters.
Grigor Dimitrov and Jan-Lennard Struff have met 5 times before, with Grigor Dimitrov leading the head to head 3-2. The last time they met was at the 2019 Rome Masters where Struff won in 3 sets 6-4/(5)6-7/6-3. However, the last time they met here in Monte-Carlo was in 2019 where Dimitrov won in straight sets 7-6(2)/6-4. They have had a very tight rivalry these two, however, going off of recent form this year, and experience in these courts, I will have to go with Grigor Dimitrov to win here. Dimitrov loves these conditions and he will want to give it his all. Dimitrov to win and make his way to the Second Round of the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters.
