TennisSection previews the 2021 Andalucia Open as Feliciano Lopez (6) meets Carlos Alcaraz in the Round of 16 on Thursday April 8th, 2021.
An exciting “All-Spanish” matchup awaits us at the 2021 Andalucia Open. Veteran Feliciano Lopez will face the young phenom Carlos Alcaraz in a classic past vs. present battle here in Spain. Tennis fans are sure to be in for a treat here and this match is sure to be filled with exciting tennis and flashy play. Will it be the sixth seeded Lopez advancing to his first Quarter-Final of the year? Or can the youngster Alcaraz get the win as he continues his astonishing start to his young career?
Feliciano Lopez is currently ranked #64 in the ATP world rankings and is a former top 15 player. He has had a long and successful career that is sadly winding down now. Despite this, he is still capable of some very good tennis, and is a dangerous opponent. However, most of his recent success has come on faster surfaces, mainly because his main strength (his serve) is not as effective here on clay. Despite having a poor 2021 season has been impressive so far here at the 2021 Andalucia Open, with a straight sets win over Taro Daniel in the First Round. He played very well from the baseline there, dominating the match with his forehand and will be very confident heading into this Round of 16 clash against young star Carlos Alcaraz.
Carloz Alcaraz is one of the most exciting young players in the world at the moment and is tipped for big things in the future. Possessing a huge game for his young age of 17, he defeated Nikola Milojevic in the First Round to set up this Round of 16 clash against Feliciano Lopez. He has a 5-5 record on the year which includes a huge upset over David Goffin at the Great Ocean Road open in February. Alcaraz served very well in his First Round win, taking over 80% of the points on his first serve and if that continues he will have a great shot of winning here. Despite his young age he is an exceptional baseline player with every shot in the book. He never backs down from a challenge and will be ready and rearing to go here against a player that made his ATP debut six years before he was born.
This is sure to be an exciting match for the fans between past and future Spanish tennis stars. The two players have never faced each other before on the ATP Tour and their head to head series stands at 0-0. This match is difficult to predict and really can go either way. Despite Feliciano Lopez being much higher ranked, I consider young Carlos Alcaraz the favorite due to the surface and recent results, and I expect him to return here. It will not be easy for him to play against someone that he looks up to, but the youngster has a huge game and he should be able to control this match from the baseline. If Lopez serves well he is always in with a chance, but on these slower courts it is not likely that he will be able to take over. I expect Carlos Alcaraz to win in two close sets.
