TennisSection previews the 2021 Sardegna Open as Nikoloz Basilashvili (4) meets Jan-Lennard Struff (5) in the Quarter-Finals on Friday, April 9th 2021.
Will Jan-Lennard Struff continue to cruise through his matches here in Sardegna with his amazing serve and forehand powering him through opponents? Will Nikoloz Basilashvili be able to get himself back on track and back up his first win in a few weeks by knocking out Struff? Both players will be determined to give it their all here, but only one will be able to make their way to the Semi-finals. Who will it be?
Nikoloz Basilashvili had to pull a comeback victory against the very low ranked Jozef Kovalik in the Second Round, finally getting a win after his title in in Qatar a month ago after which he faded away in form again. Basilashvili won in 3 sets 4-6/6-4/7-5, but this was not a very impressive victory in my opinion as he met a very low ranked opponent in Kovalik and he should really be able to get some straight set victories under his belt against opponents of that quality. Basilashvili will want to back up this win to give himself some confidence again and gain momentum going into further tournaments in the clay-court season, but he will have to ensure he is at his best level as he meets Jan-Lennard Struff.
Jan-Lennard Struff powered through his Second Round match, using his massive serve, and his amazing forehand to defeat the Brit, Liam Broady, in straight sets 6-4/6-2. Jan-Lennard Struff has a lot of experience on the ATP Tour, having played professionally for 12 years, but he is at his peak currently. Struff has put on some solid performances this year at the ATP Cup and I definitely think he will have some very strong tournaments this year, perhaps getting his first title under his belt. Jan-Lennard Struff will be filled with confidence coming into this match against Nikoloz Basilashvili as he has had some very strong victories against him in recent years.
Nikoloz Basilashvili and Jan-Lennard Struff have met 5 times before, with Jan-Lennard Struff leading the head to head 3-2. Over the last year and a half, Struff has won both their encounters in both Dubai and Paris, winning both in straight sets 6-1/6-0 and 6-4/6-2 respectively. Basilashvili has obviously achieved more throughout his career, is higher ranked, and has had more recent success, but at the end of the day, Basilashvili’s highs are very high, and his lows are very low. Struff is a very consistent player, and he will take advantage of Basilashvili’s downwards slump in recent weeks to book himself a spot in the Semi-finals of the 2021 Sardegna Open.
