TennisSection previews the 2021 Sardegna Open as Lorenzo Sonego (3) meets Gilles Simon in the Second Round on Thursday, April 8th 2021.
Will we see the Gilles Simon of old as he looks to cause the upset here in the Second Round and finally get some positive results under his belt in 2021? Will Lorenzo Sonego come out here ready to impress any Italian fans watching at home and show them that he is the real deal? Both players can win this match if they are on top of their game, but only one will make their way to the Quarter-finals of the 2021 Sardegna Open. Who will it be?
Gilles Simon was able to comeback from a set down on Tuesday against the very tough Stefano Travaglia, winning 1-6/6-3/6-4, and booking himself a spot in the Second Round. Simon has not been playing much on the ATP Tour recently due to him not wanting to leave Europe to play as the restrictions would prevent him from seeing his family enough. Simon is now picking and choosing smaller tournaments to participate in aiming to both spend more time with his family in the latter stages of his career, but also as a way to get some solid wins under his belt against lesser players, giving him more confidence. Will Gilles Simon be able to ride the momentum as he meets another Italian in Lorenzo Sonego here in the Second Round?
Lorenzo Sonego had a good week last week in Miami, reaching the Fourth Round, only losing to one of the best players on the ATP Tour at the moment in Stefanos Tsitsipas in 2 sets 6-2/7-6. Sonego is a solid player on his day, and you have to remember that when he is motivated, he can beat the best in the world, as we saw last year in Vienna when he beat Novak Djokovic in straight sets. Sonego has a great all-court game and he is able to move around the court with speed, whilst also having the patience to rally for a long time. Lorenzo will be determined to show the Italian fans that he is being undervalued compared to other Italian talent, but when you look at it, he has had very solid victories and performances under his belt. Will Sonego oust the experience of Gilles Simon here?
Lorenzo Sonego and Gilles Simon have never met before, and this is definitely going to be a very interesting encounter in the Second Round of the 2021 Sardegna Open. Although Gilles Simon has 11 more years of professional tennis experience, and nearly 500 career wins under his belt, he has been on the decline since 2020. Simon does not have the stamina to hang with the youngsters anymore, and I see Lorenzo Sonego getting the job done here in Sardegna. It will definitely be tight, as Simon will give it his all, but at the end of the day, Lorenzo Sonego will win and make his way to the Quarter-finals.
