TennisSection previews the 2021 Miami Open as Daniil Medvedev (1) meets Roberto Bautista-Agut (7) in the Quarter-Finals on Wednesday March 31st, 2021.
Top seeded Daniil Medvedev of Russia will seventh seeded Spaniard Roberto Bautista-Agut in the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Miami Open. This is shaping up to be yet another exciting matchup and one that the fans will not want to miss. Both players have been in mixed form here so far and will be hoping to extend their stay here in Miami by advancing to the Semi-Finals. Will it be the world number two Medvedev getting the win as expected? Or will Roberto Bautista-Agut cause the upset?
Daniil Medvedev is the new world number two in the world, and is seeded #1 at an ATP-1000 event for the first time in his career. He started the event in dominant fashion but faltered somewhat in his Third Round match against Alexei Popyrin. He was in complete control in the second set but then a mental lapse allowed the young Aussie to win the second set and almost win the match. Medvedev was much improved in his Round of 16 win over Frances Tiafoe, but still has not displayed the dominant tennis that he is capable of. He will have to be much improved here against one of the toughest competitors on the ATP Tour in Roberto Bautista-Agut who surely will not allow him a lifeline if he slips up again.
Roberto Bautista-Agut is currently ranked #12 in the world and is considered one of the most consistent players on the ATP Tour. A very solid baseliner, his flat and powerful groundstrokes are a very dangerous weapon on this surface. He was outstanding in his Round of 16 win over American John Isner, saving a match en route to a third set tiebreaker victory. He is one of the most ferocious competitors on tour, and will be eager and waiting for Medvedev to give him an opening to take advantage of. If he can serve well, he will have a great chance of causing the upset here against a player that he has beaten before. Daniil Medvedev gets all the headlines, but Bautista-Agut quietly gets the job done and should not be underestimated here at the 2021 Miami Open.
Daniil Medvedev and Roberto Bautista-Agut have met each other twice before on the ATP Tour, with the Spaniard surprisingly leading the head to head series 2-0. This is sure to be a ferocious battle between two of the top baseliners in the world and tennis fans will be in for a treat. While Medvedev is the heavy favorite, Bautista-Agut has numerous top 10 wins and will be quietly confident of victory here. Taking everything into account, I am going with the Russian to get the win here. I expect a very close match, possibly going the distance but Daniil Medvedev has the big advantage when it comes to serving and I think that will be the difference here. Medvedev will get the tough victory and advance to the Semi-Finals of the 2021 Miami Open.
