TennisSection previews the 2021 Acapulco Open as Milos Raonic (4) meets Dominik Koepfer in the Round of 16 on Wednesday March 17th, 2021.
Both players won their First Round matches in comfortable fashion, in straight sets. Can the unseeded German Dominik Koepfer cause an upset here over the much higher ranked Milos Raonic? They both seem to be in top form at the moment and we are sure to be in for an intriguing matchup here at the 2021 Acapulco Open. Who will win and advance to the Quarter-Finals here in Mexico?
Milos Raonic is currently ranked #19 in the world but is a former top 5 player. He will no doubt have his eyes firmly fixed on returning to the top 10, where he was a fixture for many years. He won his First Round match over Tommy Paul in two tight sets 7-6, 6-4. Despite the close score line, Raonic was never in much trouble, going through the entire match without being broken. As evidenced by that match, he is heavily reliant on his serve, which is one of the best on tour, to win matches. He also has a powerful baseline game, and loves the “one-two punch” which is ending the point immediately after a big serve. If he is serving well then it is very difficult to beat him and he will be looking to use that tactic again here at the 2021 Acapulco Open.
Dominik Koepfer of Germany is ranked #71 in the world and had a relatively easy path to the Round of 16. He was drawn against local Wild Card Gerardo Lopez Villasenor and won 6-4, 6-2 in just over an hour. He served very well here, and is a very strong baseliner. The German will have to return very well to have a chance to upset Milos Raonic here at the 2021 Acapulco Open. He has had a rough start to the 2021 season, with this being only his third time appearing in the Second Round at a tournament. After a solid past few years on the ATP Tour he will be eager to get back on track. However he enters this match as the big underdog and it will take a huge effort for him to avoid crashing out in yet another Second Round.
This will be the first time the two players have faced each other on the ATP Tour, and the head to head series stands at 0-0. While Dominik Koepfer is a solid player, I am expecting a comfortable win for Milos Raonic here. Koepfer has shown flashes of his quality over the years and certainly is talented enough to trouble the big players on his day, but has been in shockingly poor form over the past year. His win in the First Round will have given him some confidence, but we cannot read too much into that as his opponent was ranked outside the top 500. Expect Raonic to come out of the blocks quickly and dominate this match with his serve from start to finish.
