Bublik vs Wolf Prediction
Alexander Bublik overcame some stiff resistance in his opening match, but eventually beat Mackenzie McDonald 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. Bublik trailed 1-4 in the third set, but won five straight games to get out of the mire. Consequently, he was able to halt the ”Halle Curse” that was doing rounds on social media. Since 2011, every Halle champion not named Roger Federer had gone on to lose their opening match at Wimbledon. And for two and a half sets, that scenario looked like repeating itself again for the 2023 Halle champion. Bublik, however, got through in the end with some vibrant attacking play, hammering 24 aces and winning 90% first-serve points.
J.J. Wolf, meanwhile, is playing his first Wimbledon this week. In fact, he had never set foot on grass before this year until his debut at Queen’s Club last month. And it looks like his game suits the lawn as he took down French qualifier Enzo Couacaud 7-5, 6-3, 7-6. It was a tight match despite the one-sided score, with Wolf converting two of his six break points while Couacaud couldn’t take any of his four break points. Wolf’s serving proved critical and bailed him out of uncomfortable positions. The American has a 3-0 h2h record over Bublik, but the Kazakh is the man riding a wave of momentum coming to Wimbledon. Still, I don’t think Bublik has a significant advantage. Wolf can certainly match him in the ace count and has a more reliable forehand bazooka. Honestly, I wouldn’t touch this match, not on the outright, and probably would be best to leave it out of any parlay. But taking at least each player to win a set looks like the wisest choice.
