Fritz withstood a determined challenge from Spanish clay-court specialist Bernabe Zapata Miralles, and ultimately prevailed 6-4, 7-5. The American did not face a single break point in the match, but needed to be patient in his return games before finally getting a breakthrough. The win is a welcome relief for Fritz who suffered a quarterfinal defeat against Marton Fucsovics in his second match on grass at the Stuttgart Open last week. Adrian Mannarino, meanwhile, edged out British wild card Liam Broady in three sets. Mannarino was pedestrian in the first set in which was outclassed by Broady’s weight of shot, losing 6-1. But the Frenchman dialed in on his experience and expertise to win the next two sets. Mannarino’s ability to hit flat makes his shots extremely challenging to handle. Even Daniil Medvedev was defenseless in Rosmalen last week. But I think Fritz has sufficient weaponry to hurt the Frenchman. A bigger and more efficient serve, and he moves well on grass. Fritz’s aggressive return game will also help to put Mannarino under pressure on serve. If he can find the right balance between defense and attack, the American will go through.
