American superstar Serena Williams is a legend of the game and is seeking a record-equaling 24th Grand Slam singles title. Can the veteran Mihaela Buzarnescu spoil the party and cause the massive upset? Serena has been poor form lately on the clay and will be hoping to turn things around here at the 2021 French Open. Will she cruise past the Romanian as expected, into the Third Round here at Roland Garros 2021?
Serena Williams is currently ranked #8 in the WTA world rankings, and is widely considered the greatest female player in history. She is approaching the end of her glittering career, and is desperately searching to equal and then surpass Margaret Court’s Grand Slam singles record. The American star has been in poor form to start the clay court season, and was even shaky in her First Round win over Maria-Camelia Begu. While she will be delighted to have gotten the win, if she is to challenge for the title here at the 2021 French Open she will have to be much improved. Luckily, she faces another low ranked opponent in Mihaela Buzarnescu and is the favorite to advance here at Roland Garros 2021. Despite not having the movement and power she once did, she is still able to dominate opponents with her heavy groundstrokes and should never be counted out.
Mihaela Buzarnescu is ranked #174 in the world, and is unseeded here at the 2021 French Open. Despite her lowly ranking, she enters this event due to her protected ranking. Once ranked as high as #20 she remains a dangerous opponent, but is approaching the twilight of her career. She struggled in her opening round win over Aranxta Rus before coming away with the 7-5, 7-5 win, and will know that she has to improve significantly if she is to have any chance here against Serena Williams. While her American opponent has been in poor form lately, she is still one of the best players in the world and it is extremely unlikely that Buzarnescu will be able to get much out of this match here at Roland Garros 2021.
This will be the first time that the two players have met on the WTA Tour, and their head to head record stands at 0-0. Despite all of Serena Williams’ struggles, she should still easily overpower her opponent Mihaela Buzarnescu to advance to the Third Round here at the 2021 French Open. The American star is not the player she once was, but it is very unlikely that she will lose to such a lowly ranked opponent, and I am backing Serena to win in straight sets here at Roland Garros 2021.
