The Russian has dominated this rivalry, but Sonego won their last clash, which incidentally came on quicker courts in Metz – his first win in four tries against Karatsev last season. Sonego’s grass-court swing began with a 6-1, 6-2 rout of compatriot Matteo Berrettini in Stuttgart. And we read too much into that win, considering Berrettini was below par and had not fully recovered from his abdominal injury. Sonego was dismissed in the very next round by Christopher O’Connell in straight sets. In as much as Karatsev doesn’t fare well on grass, Sonego is extremely short in the ML here. Karatsev is capable of staying in touch on serve, and we like his odds on the sets spread.
