Two-time French Open quarterfinalist Andrey Rublev has dropped a set in each of his opening two matches to Laslo Djere and then Corentin Moutet. While getting work done in straight sets in these opening rounds is always a bonus, Rublev will be delighted to avoid the rolling parade of shocks that have seen some of the top 10 seeds already bow out. So even dropping a set to a power-hitting Lorenzo Sonego is not a bad result for the Russian provided he can get that gutsy win in the end. These sorts of matches are all to build momentum and sometimes winning ugly is all that matters. Nonetheless, I do expect Sonego to give it a go here. He was sensational the last time he played Rublev in Rome where he went on to make the semis in a Masters for the first time. He’s unlikely to win the ultimate battle again but look out for the over 3.5 sets for value, with Rublev getting his revenge two years in the making.
