Quentin Halys and J.J. Wolf have not played each other on the ATP Tour, so this first-round match at the Rome Masters is their first official meeting. Halys has enjoyed an incredible spell of good form on clay, reaching his maiden ATP semifinal in Estoril last month, beating Bautista Agut and Dominic Thiem in back-to-back matches. Although he’s lost three of his five matches since he’s managed to win at least a set in each of those defeats. It is a stark reminder that Halys is playing inarguably the best tennis of life right now, and it would take a monumental effort from J.J. Wolf to muster the Frenchman. Wolf is not particularly fond of the surface, with his best result this year’s clay swing coming in Houston where he reached the quarters. Since then he’s lost two in a row, including a first-round exit in Madrid against Shevechenko. Halys hasn’t failed to win a set on the dirt in 2023, so he looks a safe pick in the sets spread.
