Madrid Open 2023: Stefanos Tsitsipas vs. Dominic Thiem Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2023 Madrid Open second-round match featuring Stefanos Tsitsipas vs. Dominic Thiem on Saturday, April 29, 2023.

Stefanos Tsitsipas vs. Dominic Thiem Preview

It’s a marquee second-round matchup pitting former finalists at the Madrid Open. Will it be Stefanos Tsitsipas who comes out on top when he locks horns against Dominic Thiem?

Stefanos Tsitsipas has an awesome record at the Madrid Open, reaching the final here back in 2019, and then advancing to the last four last year where he lost to Alexander Zverev in three. Tsitsipas’ shot at glory this fortnight begins in earnest against a former finalist too in Dominic Thiem.

Dominic Thiem coolly dispatched Briton Kyle Edmund 6-4, 6-1, in the first round of the Madrid Open taking another encouraging step in this year’s clay swing as he bids to return to the elite level of men’s tennis. It’s been over 18 months since Thiem injured his wrist in Mallorca, and only recently returned into the top 100.

Stefanos Tsitsipas vs. Dominic Thiem Prediction and Pick

Dominic Thiem leads Stefanos Tsitsipas 5-3 in their head-to-head, but they last played each other at the ATP Finals in London in 2020, with Thiem winning that encounter in three sets. Obviously, that was before Thiem’s wrist injury when his unbridled thunderbolts left everyone in awe. Sadly, he’s not been able to recapture that magic nor been the recipient of some cushy draws that would have eased his way into finding his best form. Tsitsipas with his fluid and controlled forehand will dictate this from the off.
