After winning his second career title at the weekend, could fatigue be an issue for Dusan Lajovic when he takes on Jason Kubler at the Madrid Open?

Dusan Lajovic had the week of his life in Banja Luka. He defeated World No. 1 Novak Djokovic and top-10 player Andrey Rublev to win the 250 event in Bosnia – the second ATP title of his career. It was a monstrous achievement even by his standards and trumps his previous run to the Monte Carlo final a few years ago. It was one of those out-of-nowhere stories of 2023 that very few could have predicted. He’ll need to dust his socks off and play in Madrid where he will face Australia’s Jason Kubler.

Jason Kubler is only 5-3 this year on clay, but did reach successive quarterfinals, first in Houston and most recently at the Sarasota Challenger. Last week he was beaten by Lorenzo Musetti in the second round of the Barcelona Open. Kubler has enjoyed a great deal of success on the lower rungs of men’s tennis on the red clay, winning nine titles on the Futures circuit. Let’s see if he can take advantage of a fatigued Dusan Lajovic at the Madrid Open.

Dusan Lajovic and Jason Kubler have not played each other on the ATP Tour, with this first-round match at the Madrid Open being their first meeting. Lajovic is the man in form, having just produced one of the most breathtaking runs to a title win this season. But there will be no rest for the weary. And it’s important to apply some degree of caution if you wish to take the Serbian on ML after an energy-sapping week in Bosnia. With that said, we like Kubler’s chances of taking at least a set here.
