Dayana Yastremska and Eugenie Bouchard both came through qualifying to set up this enticing first-round match at the Madrid Open. Who will prevail?

Dayana Yastremska managed to pick up the first wins of this year’s clay swing, beating Eva Lys (retirement) and Julia Grabher without dropping a set. Against Austria’s Grabher it also seemed like her opponent was struggling with injury after taking a MTO in the match. But the Ukranian was playing at a searing pace and Grabher just couldn’t really get up to speed. Yastremska will now play fellow qualifier Eugenic Bouchard in the main draw.

Eugenic Bouchard was equally, if not better, in qualifying for the main draw at the Marid Open. Bouchard did not drop a set against either Sara Sorribes Tormo or Elizabeth Mandlik. Her last main draw appearance in Madrid saw Bouchard make the quarterfinal, six years ago. Are we in for a potential deep run this fortnight?

Dayana Yastremksa and Eugenie Bouchard have not played each on the WTA Tour, with this first-round match at the Madrid Open being their first meeting. Yastremska is a marginal favorite coming into the match -120, with Bouchard at -102. This is close since both players showed tremendous form and immaculate ball striking in qualies. But Bouchard seems to have adapted much quicker on the surface and has played at a very good level in recent weeks. Yastremska is more than capable of throwing wayward performances with her shock defeats in Bogota and Stuttgart springing to mind. With that said, I feel Bouchard will have a lot more control over her shots from the baseline and is the better server.
