Dominic Thiem had a couple of nice wins in Estoril, before suffering an unfortunate defeat to Quentin Halys in the quarterfinals. Although Thiem is still able to produce a very high level like we saw at the end of last year, his injury has not allowed him to return to full flight yet. Whether he’ll reach his true level again is unknown, and considering how tough of an opponent Richard Gasquet still is, it’s difficult to expect much from Thiem at the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters.

Richard Gasquet would be a heavy underdog if this was the Thiem of just over 2 years ago, however, that is not the case here, so Gasquet will find himself as the favorite coming into this one. Neither player has the strongest forehand at the moment, and although Thiem’s forehand was arguably the best in the world, Gasquet will definitely be able to hold him off on that wing. Gasquet also has the ability to go backhand to backhand with Thiem, which will give him the edge here at the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters.

Unfortunately for the Austrian, I feel he won’t be able to continue that streak, with his level simply being too erratic this season and mostly quite low for his standards. The Frenchman looks poised to ultimately take him down for a place in the Round of 32 of the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters.
