TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Lorenzo Sonego takes on Sam Querrey in the first round on Monday, January 17th, 2022.
Will Sam Querrey be able to find some form after having not really shown much for the second half of last year? Will Lorenzo Sonego get a good win under his belt to build some momentum as he aims to show us his best tennis? This is going to be an entertaining and tight encounter between two players trying to find their form, but only one will make their way to the round of 64 of the 2022 Australian Open. Who will it be?
Sam Querrey is currently on a 7-match losing streak on the ATP Tour, starting at Wimbledon and continuing for the rest of the 2021 season. The start of this forms as quite shocking from the big swinging American, as it started right after he made the Mallorca Final. Sam is getting older and he does not seem as focused as other players in his class on maintaining his body at its peak, by training effectively and making sure he is getting the best nutrients into his system. It seems like Sam has perhaps taken a step back in his career where he does not care as much, but here at the 2022 Australian Open he can perhaps get something going against Lorenzo Sonego if his serve is firing.
Lorenzo Sonego will be very happy with his start to the 2022 season, having reached the quarterfinals of the Sydney Open last week, losing eventually to Aslan Karatsev in a tight 3 setter. Lorenzo is a great player on his day and he will know that he has the capabilities of causing big upsets at times as he has shown over the last 2 years. Sonego enters the 2022 Australian Open knowing that he is in the tougher side of the draw, but he will be quite happy that he is meeting Sam Querrey early on because if he is at his best, he should win this match.
Lorenzo Sonego and Sam Querrey have met 1 time before, with this being a repeat of their meeting last year in the first round of the Australian Open. Last year in this same circumstance, Lorenzo won the match in straight sets. This year, I expect a very similar outcome. Lorenzo has been getting some solid minutes under his belt as he played in Sydney, whilst we do not really know what Sam Querrey has been doing. I expect that Sam is still not in great form and he has some rust on him, therefore, Lorenzo should capitalize on this early on and make sure he does not take his foot off the pedal in this match.
