Borna Coric lost Christopher Eubanks from a set and a break up in Miami, a defeat that characterized Coric’s season so far. It has been stop-start, to say the least, and the Croat will start again on the clay. He is a former quarterfinalist at the Monte-Carlo Masters, but overall, he had four first-round defeats in six visits to the Principality. Can he change that record when he plays Nicolas Jarry?

Nicolas Jarry also suffered a wretched defeat in his most recent tournament at the Marrakech Open, losing at the first hurdle to Italian journeyman Andrea Vavassori. Jarry is now 10-3 on the clay heading to the Monte-Carlo Masters having made the semifinal in Rio before capturing a second career title on home soil in Santiago.

Borna Coric and Nicolas Jarry have not played each other on the ATP Tour, with this first-round match at the Monte-Carlo Masters being their first meeting. It’s a close one to call. While I do think Coric will be desperate for a response to address a mini-crisis (lost three in a row), it’s hard to overlook Jarry after his terrific set of results during the Golden Swing. Defeat in Marrakech was probably expected given that he was out for a month after winning Santiago. Expect normal service to resume for the big-hitting Chilean.
