TennisSection previews the 2023 Houston Open second-round match featuring John Isner vs Gijs Brouwer on Wednesday, April 5, 2023.
Isner vs Brouwer Match Preview
Former Houston Open champion John Isner will look to embark on another deep run in Texas. But recent form could count against him especially if the undercard Gijs Brouwer repeats last year’s exploits. Who will prevail?
John Isner has been really up against it of late, losing narrowly, as is always the case with his matches. Isner last tasted victory in February in that record-breaking week in Dallas by beating J.J. Wolf in the semifinal. He went on to lose a dramatic final to Yibing Wu despite hammering a record 44 aces in a best-of-three-set match against the Chinese. That defeat stung without a doubt as it kickstarted a famine of zero wins in his next three tournaments. Can he turn his fortunes around against Gijs Brouwer at the Houston Open?
Gijs Brouwer reached his maiden ATP quarterfinal at the Houston Open last season, scaling the qualifying rounds and then upsetting Feliciano Lopez and J.J. Wolf in the main draw before losing to Reilly Opelka. Brouwer will have to contend with the big-serving John Isner this time who resembles a wounded animal right having lost four in a row. Can the Dutchman pile more misery on the former champion?
Isner vs Brouwer Prediction and Pick
John Isner and Gijs Brouwer have not played each other on the ATP Tour, with this second-round match at the Houston Open being their first collision. Eight of Isner’s 10 matches this season has seen 23 games or more, and the only two times the games spread was below 23 games, there was at least one tiebreak in it. We know Isner’s return games, particularly on clay will not upto the standard. And Brouwer is no slouch on serve, we expect him to really keep with Isner in the ace count and save break points if any materialize. With that said, Isner is not in great form and the best way to approach this one is backing the overs in the games market.
