Jessica Pegula vs. Anastasia Potapova Match Preview
Jessica Pegula was handed a very tough opener at the 2023 Indian Wells tournament, playing Italian power hitter Camila Giorgi in her first match back in over two weeks. Giorgi had been a thorn in Pegula’s game in recent meetings, pushing the American to three sets in their last two matches and even holding match points. But despite going a set down, Pegula raised his level to come through easily in the end, winning 3-6 6-1 6-2.
Anastasia Potapova, meanwhile, survived a second-round upset and defeated World No. 59 Xiyu Wang 4-6 7-6 6-2 in a match that lasted two hours and 45 minutes. The match was on a knife edge, particularly in that second set, with Wang just one tiebreak away from the third of Indian Wells, but Potapova showcased her improved mental fortitude to dig herself out of trouble and go on to dominate the third set.

Jessica Pegula leads Anastasia Potapova 2-0 in their head-to-head. Pegula dropped just four games the last time they played at the 2021 US Open. Potapova has since improved by leaps and bounds, with her resilience coming to the fore each time she plays from the back foot. But given her recent struggles in closing out matches in the past few weeks, Pegula’s consistency should shine here. The American is odds-on to make it to the second week of Indian Wells.
