United Cup 2023: Rafael Nadal vs. Alex De Minaur Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2023 United Cup as Rafael Nadal takes on Alex De Minaur in the group stages on Monday, January 2, 2023.

Rafael Nadal is chasing his first singles win at the 2023 United Cup, and he will come up against Australia’s tireless runner Alex De Minaur in a crucial group stage between Spain and Australia. Who will clinch the win for their respective country?

Rafael Nadal fell to a shock defeat at the hands of Great Britain’s Cameron Norrie, and Spain ultimately lost the tie. Nadal had taken the first set 6-3, quelling fears of persistent injury concerns that engulfed him in the second half of the 2022 season. But Norrie upped the ante in the second and third sets, winning a dramatic decider 6-4 – a set that lasted an hour and 7 minutes. It was easily the match of the tournament thus far. Now Nadal will set his sights on getting his first win at the United Cup when he takes on Alex De Minaur.

Alex De Minaur, meanwhile, was promoted to be Australia’s No.1 men’s player in the absence of Nick Kyrgios. That meant that De Minaur was set to take on the opposition’s top-ranked player in their opening tie against Great Britain, which incidentally was Norrie. De Minaur huffed and puffed but was overwhelmed by Norrie’s mix of topspin and flat hitting from both wings. He fell to a 6-3 6-3 defeat as Australia lost the tie.

Rafael Nadal leads Alex De Minaur 3-0 in their head-to-head. Two of those meetings were played on Australian territory, with Nadal coming out on top at the Australian Open in 2018 and most recently at the 2020 ATP Cup. De Minaur, however, is a vastly different competitor these days having earned himself the title ‘Demon’ from the tennis fans owing to his electric speed on the court. He has also climbed the ATP rankings in recent seasons to establish himself as a Top 30 mainstay. Nadal will likely win if he stays clutch at the critical points in the match, but this will be far from a stroll in the park for the 22-time Major winner.
