TennisSection previews the 2022 Argentina Open as Lorenzo Sonego takes on Sebastian Baez in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, February 9th, 2022.
Will Lorenzo Sonego get the win? Will Sebastian Baez pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have a top Italian clay courter taking on the home favorite and next-gen star. Who will move on to the quarterfinals at the 2022 Argentina Open?
Lorenzo Sonego hasn’t been displaying his best level as of late, but for the most part he’s definitely maintained a pretty consistent level within the top 40 or 50 players. He should be able to dispatch of Sebastian Baez all things considered, but I don’t think it will come to easily. Baez has been on fire considering his circumstances, and Sonego has been a little flat. I expect Sonego to take him down in the end, but it will take 3 sets as he aims to make the quarterfinals of the 2022 Argentina Open.
Sebastian Baez has been playing quite well, although he did suffer an unfortunate loss in a different part of Argentina, he still looks pretty solid to push Sonego in my opinion. If he plays his best tennis, he will defeat Lorenzo Sonego. However, I don’t see that happening. Sonego just took down Baez pretty easily a couple of weeks ago, and he wasn’t exactly too consistent last week, so I think Sonego will tough it out and move on to the final eight here at the 2022 Argentina Open.
Lorenzo Sonego and Sebastian Baez have met once before, with Lorenzo Sonego leading the head to head 1-0. Their first meeting actually just came down under a few weeks ago in Sydney, Australia. Sonego took that match quite easily, and while it was on a quick hard court, Baez has shown versatility off the clay. I expect Baez to challenge him, and I would not be too surprised if he ended up winning the match as Sonego isn’t too consistent himself. At the end of the day though, Sonego has shown his best level quite a few times on the clay, and he can compete with the best. Let’s see if he can get a good start to his campaign as the number 3 seed at the 2022 Argentina Open.
