United Cup 2023: Nick Kyrgios vs. Cameron Norrie Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2023 United Cup as Nick Kyrgios takes on Cameron Norrie in the Group Stage on Thursday, December 29th, 2022.

One of the popcorn matches of the group stage at the inaugural United Cup will pit Australia’s Nick Kyrgios and Great Britain’s Cameron Norrie. The pair clashed at a Saudi exhibition just a few weeks ago, and will now battle yet again for an even bigger prize. Who will come out on top?

Nick Kyrgios was a transformed man in 2022. The mercurial Aussie played his best tennis on the ATP Tour, reaching the upper echelons of men’s tennis once again and demonstrating his talent on the global stage. Kyrgios reached his first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon, fulfilling his teenage potential, although he lost a close four-setter to Novak Djokovic. After struggling with mental health issues in the last two seasons, and nearly quitting the sport, his resurgence and resilience have been one of the feelgood storylines of 2022 in men’s tennis. Will he get Australia up and running at the United Cup when he locks horns with Cameron Norrie?

Cameron Norrie will carry Great Britain’s hopes at the United Cup. He faces a potentially daunting task against the unpredictable Kyrgios in a blockbuster round-robin match. Norrie will certainly be the pantomime villain on Australian soil with Kyrgios expected to generate a lion’s share of support. The last time these two collided on Australian soil it was a very one-sided affair. However, the pair met recently in a Saudi exhibition tournament, with Norrie beating Kyrgios in two 10-point tiebreaks.

The Saudi exhibition notwithstanding, Cameron Norrie leads Nick Kyrgios 2-1 in their head-to-head. Kyrgios thrashed Norrie the last time they clashed in a team competition, at the 2020 ATP Cup. The Briton still holds a narrow lead in the series but will be put under constant pressure not just from the big-serving Kyrgios, but the Australian faithful. We just know how much Kyrgios thrives in such an environment. He won the Australian Open doubles title in 2022 and credited the crowd for their immense support. The smart money is on Kyrgios to get the W.
