TennisSection previews the 2021 Los Cabos Open as Cameron Norrie (1) meets Elias Ymer in the Round of 16 on Wednesday July 21st, 2021.
Top seeded Cameron Norrie of Great Britain begins his 2021 Los Cabos Open campaign against Elias Ymer in the Round of 16. Norrie has quietly been having a career-best season, and will be looking to win his first career title here in Mexico. Elias Ymer is a talented but inconsistent Swede, can he pull off the massive upset?
Cameron Norrie is the number one seed here at the 2021 Los Cabos Open and is currently ranked #30 on the ATP Tour. The Brit has been having a fantastic season so far in 2021, which has catapulted him to a career-high ranking. He currently boasts an outstanding 31-14 record on the year, with three Finals appearances and he will be desperate to win his first career title in his first tournament as #1 seed. His steady lefty game is very difficult for opponents to handle, and he is one of the most intelligent players on tour, and is mentally and tactically very strong. He enters this match against Elias Ymer as the big favorite, and is expected to advance comfortably here.
Elias Ymer is unseeded here at the 2021 Los Cabos Open, and is ranked #169 on the ATP Tour. The young Swede has long been considered a very talented player, but is yet to put it all together on the Tour. He entered this event with low expectations, but stunned the more favored Matthew Ebden in the First Round, displaying some attacking tennis in a very assured performance. That win would have given him tons of confidence, however he is coming up against one of the most consistent players this season in Cameron Norrie. Ymer has the firepower to cause Norrie some issues here, but he has never displayed the type of consistency that is necessary to defeat an opponent of this caliber.
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, however they met twice on the Challenger Tour, splitting the matches. However, those matches were back in 2017 and 2018, and their careers have gone in drastically different directions since then. Despite Elias Ymer putting in a strong performance in the First Round, I am backing Cameron Norrie to get the comfortable win here. He has improved by leaps and bounds this year, and has really turned heads with his consistent play and results. Ymer has the quality to make things interesting, but won’t be able to sustain the level needed to get the win here. I expect Norrie to win in two relatively comfortable sets, advancing to the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 Los Cabos Open.
