US Open 2022: Nick Kyrgios vs. Benjamin Bonzi Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 US Open as Nick Kyrgios takes on Benjamin Bonzi in the first round on Wednesday, August 31st, 2022.

Will Nick Kyrgios produce another serving masterclass at the US Open? Or will he meet his match in Benjamin Bonzi? This has the makings of a potential banana peel, and Kyrgios will need to be laser-focused to avoid the upset. Who will prevail?

Nick Kyrgios advanced into the second round after edgingcompatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis on Monday night. As soon as the draw of the 2022 US Open came out, the first round match that most people were looking forward to watch was the all-Australian clash between the Wimbledon finalist Kyrgios and his good buddy Kokkinakis. But it was Kyrgios who ate all the popcorn in a nip and tuck contest. Despite the perfunctory result –  a straight sets win- Kyrgios’s progress was not smooth sailing. Kokkinakis was only broken twice in the match and out-served Kyrgios in the ace count. Nonetheless, Kyrgios was clutch on the bigger points which proved decisive.

Benjamin Bonzi, for his part, also outlasted a countryman in Ugo Humbert. Bonzi survived a marathon match 7-6 6-1 5-7 3-6 6-2 to win a main draw match at the US Open at the first attempt. He appeared to be on his way to the second round devoid of any drama, but was pegged back by a resurgent Humbert who began to find his bearings in sets three and four. Ultimately, Bonzi regrouped and broke his compatriot twice in the deciding fifth set to clinch victory.

Nick Kyrgios and Benjamin Bonzi have not played each other on the ATP Tour. Wednesday’s match at the US Open will be their first official meeting. Kyrgios has some serious interest at this tournament and he showcased his brilliance at times in dispatching Kokkinakis, who it has to be said is no slouch on a hard court. Bonzi has a tall order to break the Kyrgios serve. But as long as he can focus on his own service games, he might unsettle Kyrgios in the tiebreaks. We know Kyrgios can crack under the slightest of commotions. Still, I think the Aussie is so hard to bet against in these early rounds.
