US Open 2022: Andy Murray vs. Francisco Cerundolo Tennis Pick and Prediction

Francisco Cerundolo and Andy Murray will do battle in the First Round of the 2022 US Open. The match is scheduled to be played on Monday August 29th, 2022.

A very exciting match is expected here at the US Open as Francisco Cerundolo meets former world number one Andy Murray in the First Round. It is unfortunate that two quality players play each other so early, but that is the way that the draw goes. It’s a clash between a young talent and the veteran, who will come out on top?

24th seed Francisco Cerundolo has really burst onto the scene over the past two seasons and has had some strong results in that period. The Argentine is ranked 27th in the world and while he is more comfortable on the clay, he is still dangerous on all surfaces. Unfortunately he is yet to win a match on hard courts over the past few tournaments after a very successful clay season. This sort of form will raise red flags, especially when he is facing former Grand Slam champion and world number one Andy Murray. He will be cursing his luck at his draw, as he would have been hoping for a lower ranked player or perhaps another clay courter in order to build some confidence. We cannot count him out here, but it’s looking like he will be in for an uphill battle.

Andy Murray is a tennis legend, whose comeback to the Tour has been one of the feel-good stories over the past few seasons. He seems to have finally found his bearings again and is looking very good this season. Now ranked 49th in the world he is a very dangerous floater in this US Open draw and his opponent Francisco Cerundolo won’t be happy at this matchup. Murray remains one of the best on Tour tactically, and there are not many more solid from the baseline. There will always be question marks surrounding his fitness, but there haven’t been many problems recently. Despite his lower ranking I would say this match is dead even and Murray certainly has a good chance at the upset here.

This will be the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, and this is a particularly difficult one to pick. While Francisco Cerundolo has been hugely impressive this year, most of his good results have come on clay, and he is likely to struggle here. While Andy Murray is a far cry from the player he once was, he remains a very solid player, especially on this surface and there are not many players stronger mentally and tactically. I am going to ignore the rankings here and back the Scotsman to win here. Once his fitness holds up, and is usually has, he is the better hard court player and especially at a Grand Slam like the US Open, experience is key. Murray to win and advance to the Second Round.
