Citi Open 2022: David Goffin vs. Jack Sock Tennis Pick and Prediction

After reaching his first Grand Slam quarterfinal since 2019, David Goffin will look to keep that momentum going at the Citi Open when he battles World No. 106 Jack Sock in a tricky opening match. Who will prevail?

David Goffin has got his season back on track. And it all started at the Marrakech Open at the start of the clay court swing in April where he picked up his sixth career title, defeating Alex Molcan in three sets in the final. That result kick started a very productive time on the ATP Tour. The Belgian reached the Round of 16 in Madrid and the third round of the French Open. But it was at Wimbledon when he burst into life, reaching his first Grand Slam quarterfinal in three years. With no ranking points on offer at SW19, his hard work has partly gone down the drain in his bid to re-enter the top 50. So he will have some ground to make up at the Citi Open.

Jack Sock, meanwhile, has also enjoyed a fruitful run of results in 2022 and he stands on the cusp of re-entering the top 100. The American won the Savannah Challenger on home soil at the start of May and went on to have an excellent grass-court season, highlighted by reaching the semifinals of Nottingham Challenger and the finals of Ilkey. Despite falling short to get a Wimbledon main draw wild card, Sock qualified for the grass court slam successfully and went on to reach the third round, losing to Jason Kubler in five sets.

David Goffin leads the head-to-head over Jack Sock 3-0. The pair, however, have not clashed since the 2017 season. Sock has played on hard courts after shutting down his grass court season, but he was absolutely throttled by Tommy Paul in Atlanta, winning just two games. While Goffin is only just getting back into action after his Wimbledon exploits, I still feel he will be too polished to fall to Sock at the Citi Open.
