TennisSection previews the 2022 Swiss Open as Casper Ruud takes on Albert Ramos Vinolas in the semifinal on Saturday, July 23rd, 2022.
Defending champion Casper Ruud will have his hands full when he takes on Spanish left-hander Albert Ramos Vinolas in the semifinals of the Swiss Open. Ramos Vinolas is also a former champion in these parts and his record on clay courts this season should fill him with optimism. Who will prevail?
After suffering a shock defeat in Bastad this past week, Casper Ruud has been quick to treat that loss as a one-off. But the top seed at the Swiss Open won’t be downbeat as the man who defeated him (Francisco Cerundolo) went on to win the title. Cerundolo was on a different level at the Nordea Open. And coupled with the fact the Norwegian had been taking a rare two-week absence from action following his Wimbledon elimination, he was bound to be rusty. Ruud has come racing at the Swiss Open this week as he continues to affirm his grip on the ATP 250s. He is now just two matches away from retaiinign his crown and potentially win his second title on Swiss soil in 2022 following his Geneva success earlier during the season. Can he overcome the stubborn and often tricky Albert Ramos Vinolas?
Albert Ramos Vinolas, for his part, maintained his outstandingclay-court form in 2022, mastering a spirited qualifier in Nicolas Jarry to reach his fourth semifinal of the season. The Spanish left-hander won a titanic tussle 7-6 4-6 7-6. He recovered from a break deficit in the third set and also saved a match point in the tiebreak before sealing victory in nearly three hours. His return to winning ways at the Swiss Open is a major plus for him after a barren run in the past couple of months threatened to derail his confidence in the second half of the season. Will he reach his second ATP final of the year?
Albert Ramos Vinolas surprisingly leads Casper Ruud 3-2 in their head-to-head. And more impressively, the Spanish veteran leads their clay-court series 3-1. Saturday’s match pits two former champions of the Swiss Open as the 2019 winner plays last year’s champion. Ruud has managed to redline his game this week and chiseled his way past a very tough opponent in JaumeMunar on Friday. And considering Ramos Vinolas’ taxing quarterfinal win, Ruud should be the odds-on favorite here.
