TennisSection previews the 2022 Nordea Open as Andrey Rublev takes on Federico Coria in the second round on Thursday, July 14th, 2022.
Andrey Rublev will play at the Nordea Open for the first time, but the Russian second seed will need to be on his toes right from the off to avoid becoming the next high-profile exit at the tournament. Will Rublev survive Federico Coria?
Andrey Rublev will play for the first time in precisely a month. Since losing to Nikoloz Basilashvili in Halle, Rublev did not partake at Wimbledon following the grass-court’s slam ban on all Russian and Belarusian players. So the World No. 8 will be looking to atone for his shock defeat last time and begin his Nordea Open campaign with a win. The Russian star has tallied an impressive 29-9 record for the season and with three titles to his name. Can he record his 30th win of the year when he takes on Federico Coria?
Federico Coria, for his part, was in action in the first round as he could not afford the luxury of a bye. The 30-year-old defeated his countryman Federico Delbonis 0-6 6-4 6-4 in a topsy-turvy encounter. Coria was broken three times in first set which was completely one-sided. But he managed to recalibrate his shots in the next two sets and Delbonis stood no chance of completing the win. Coria excelled in moving his opponent across the baseline and his serve improved immeasurably.
Andrey Rublev and Federico Coria have not played other before this. While we are not entirely sure if rest time was a bad thing for Rublev’s momentum in the past month, I still expect him to be in top shape. He did not particularly play a lot on grass either way, so he might not even need to adjust to the dirt surroundings. Coria is a fine competitor as are most South Americans especially on clay. But he is going to struggle to contain Rublev’s power from the baseline.
