Felix Auger-Aliassime has really made some strides on the clay, taking down some great players on the clay and making his mark on the surface. He has a great chance to move through to the last eight in Rome coming up against Marcos Giron. Now, Marcos did beat a great player, but FAA’s massive game totally counters the consistent baseline hitting of Giron and the general way in which he approaches matches, especially on the red clay of the 2022 Rome Masters.
Marcos Giron took down Schwartzman quite convincingly, and while that is a great win, to follow it up with a win over Felix Auger-Aliassime seems near impossible. Not only do I feel it’s a poor matchup for the American, but clay is definitely not his surface, and with how much time FAA will have to rip the ball and play aggressively, I expect him to take this one and book a spot in the quarterfinals at the 2022 Rome Masters.
Felix Auger-Aliassime and Marcos Giron have met once before, with Felix Auger-Aliassime leading the head to head 1-0. Their one meeting in fact came on the clay, but a number of years ago in 2019. Neither player was as good as they are now, but FAA is obviously the far superior player, and I think he’ll really demonstrate his skill set on the clay to book his place in the quarterfinals at the 2022 Rome Masters.
