Denis Shapovalov hasn’t played a lot this season, especially on clay. He however is aiming to make a grand return at the Rome Masters after a disappointing run in Madrid. I expect him to come through the match, Sonego will be playing with the crowd and using his perfectly constructed game for the clay, but Shapovalov will be too good for him in the end, also making a good run in Rome last season coming a point away from taking out Rafael Nadal. Let’s see if Shapovalov can regroup here at the 2022 Rome Masters.
Lorenzo Sonego hasn’t really had any notable results here since last season where he lost out in the quarterfinals to World No.1 Novak Djokovic in a thriller. I don’t expect him to defend those points this time around though, as Denis Shapovalov will be hungry and ready to play his famous first-strike tennis to take it to Sonego and get the win to move on to the Round of 32 at the 2022 Rome Masters.
Denis Shapovalov and Lorenzo Sonego have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. It’s a good matchup for Shapovalov, as Sonego likes to rally and be aggressive with his forehand, but is relatively one dimensional in his hitting in that Shapovalov will be able to jump all over his balls, ripping them to his liking and aiming to play his aggressive brand of tennis to get a good start off to his campaign at the 2022 Rome Masters.
