Reilly Opelka hasn’t played too much of the clay, but he’s been improving a lot in the last year or so and has potential on the clay. His massive serve allows him to be a competitor in almost any match, even on the clay of Rome. Stan Wawrinka is looking to come back to the top of the game, but it’s going to take time, and it will be very difficult coming up against top 20 players like Opelka. Let’s see if the tallest player in the world can march on to the Round of 32 at the 2022 Rome Masters.
Stan Wawrinka came back in Monte-Carlo, taking a set in his first match in over a year. He has the chance to do so against Opelka, I don’t think the American will love the slow conditions in Rome, so Wawrinka should be able to use his clay court mastery as a former French Open champion and maybe, just maybe have a shot taking out Reilly Opelka to reach the Round of 32 at the 2022 Rome Masters.
Reilly Opelka and Stan Wawrinka have met once before, with Reilly Opelka leading the head to head 1-0. Their one meeting came at Wimbledon, with Opelka winning in 5 sets in 2019. This meeting is rather irrelevant, as Wawrinka was still in good form then but not really ever too fond of the grass, and Opelka obviously having a perfect serve for it. Let’s see what happens as the two aim to overcome their difficulties to fight for a spot in the last 32 of the 2022 Rome Masters.
