TennisSection previews the 2022 Madrid Open as Stefanos Tsitsipas takes on Alexander Zverev in the semifinals on Saturday, May 7th, 2022.
Will Stefanos Tsitsipas get the win? Will Alexander Zverev pull off the upset? This will be a fascinating one, where we have yet another renewal of the Tsitsipas-Zverev rivalry, this time you would say in Zverev’s house. Who will triumph and move on to the final at the 2022 Madrid Open?
Stefanos Tsitsipas got a good win over Andrey Rublev, he didn’t play his best tennis, but it was a good test as Rublev threw a lot at him, but he came through anyhow and showed his mastery of the clay. It won’t be getting any easier coming up against Alexander Zverev, though. Zverev is the defending champion and 2x Madrid Open champion, it’s a quicker clay court, and while Tsitsipas will be the favorite, at the end of the day we know Tsitsipas will need to play his best if he wants to reach the final of this event for a 2nd time at the 2022 Madrid Open.
Alexander Zverev took down FAA in impressive fashion, 6-3 7-5. He won’t be overly confident heading into this one despite being the defending champion. He’s definitely had a disappointing season so far, let alone his loss to Tsitsipas in Monte-Carlo. You never know with Zverev, though, he could bow out first round or grab the title. Tsitsipas will be looking to set up aggressive patterns with his forehand, but the quicker conditions will allow Zverev to serve his way deep into the sets and really use his backhand to exploit the weakness of Tsitsipas, his backhand. Let’s see if he can pull the slight upset and take out Stefanos Tsitsipas to carry his title defense all the way into the final clash of the 2022 Madrid Open.
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alexander Zverev have met ten times before, with Stefanos Tsitsipas leading the head to head 7-3.Tsitsipas surprisingly has quite the hold over Zverev, but that could all change if we head to quicker courts. Now, Madrid is still a clay court, but especially this year it really is playing fast. If Zverev serves well which he has been able to do for a majority of this tournament, then I’m confident he can take his title defense to the final two of the 2022 Madrid Open for a chance to defend his title and be crowned the Madrid Open champion for a 3rd time.
