Madrid Open 2022: Felix Auger-Aliassime vs. Cristian Garin Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Madrid Open as Felix Auger-Aliassime takes on Cristian Garin in the second round on Wednesday, May 4th, 2022.

Canada’s No. 1 Felix Auger-Aliassime will be looking to improve on his Madrid Open record when he takes on Chile’s No. 1 in Cristian Garin. None of these players have hit the ground running this clay season, so this could be chance for either of them to make amends.

Felix Auger-Aliassime has reached back-to-back quarterfinals at his last two tournaments. But by his own high standards, his record should have been a lot better than his current 4-4 on clay this term. There have been some below par performances such as the one in Monte Carlo when he lost to Lorenzo Musetti in the first round. The Canadian enjoyed a fantastic start to the year on hard courts, winning the ATP Cup and his maiden ATP title in Rotterdam. But he has looked apprehensive in recent weeks and will need a cool head to turn things around at the Madrid Open.

Cristian Garin, meanwhile, has not been in great form. The Chilean is 4-6 on clay this season which is extremely surprising. Garin considers clay as his favorite surface, but has piled up a handful of underwhelming performances most notably during the Golden Swing in South America where he failed to win a match. His stock has fallen sharply as a result of his failure to defend his title in Houston and is teetering closer to exit the world’s Top 40. Garin won his first-round match at the Madrid Open against a fatigued Frances Tiafoe.

Cristian Garin owns a 2-1 head-to-head record over Felix Auger-Aliassime. All three previous meetings were contested on clay including their most recent match at the Monte Carlo Masters last season. Garin’s win over Tiafoe was much needed. He has endured one of his worst seasons on clay and his ranking is plummeting substantially. But I wouldn’t read too much into that win against a very tired opponent, considering Tiafoe’s exploits in Estoril. So Auger-Aliassime should well equipped to handle the inconsistent Chilean.
