Both Jannik Sinner and Alex De Minaur were pushed to their absolute limit on Monday but passed their tests with flying colors. The pair of them will lock horns in an intriguing second-round match at the Madrid Open. Who will prevail?
Jannik Sinner pulled the rabbit out of the hat in his first-round match against Tommy Paul. With his back against the wall Sinner produced a remarkable feat of escapology to overcome the American. He saved three match points – two of them against serve with Paul leading 7-6 5-3 before pinching the second set in a tiebreak and going on to complete the comeback. Remarkably, it was the fourth time this season that Sinner has salvaged a win from match point down.
Alex De Minaur, for his part, also survived a stern test in the form of Pedro Martinez. The Spanish baseliner, being cheered by a vociferous home support, recovered from dropping the first set in a tiebreak. He won six of the seven games in the second set to level. However, De Minaur upped his level in the decider and after saving three break points in the first game of the decider, he broke Martinez three times to avoid the upset.
Jannik Sinner leads Alex De Minaur 3-0 in their head-to-head. From their first meeting at the Next Gen ATP Finals in 2019, Sinner has asserted his superiority over the sprinting Australian including their 2022 Australian Open showdown earlier this year. Both players showed resilience to win their first-round matches at the Madrid Open from the losing positions. While Sinner enters this match as the favorite, he has looked shaky. De Minaur is playing some of the best tennis of his career on the clay and his last two defeats have come against Top 10 opposition. The stage is set for De Minaur to flip the script in this one.
