Barcelona Open 2022: Carlos Alcaraz vs. Pablo Carreno Busta Tennis Pick and Prediction

Barcelona Open 2022: Carlos Alcaraz vs. Pablo Carreno Busta Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Barcelona Open as Carlos Alcaraz takes on Pablo Carreno Busta in the Final on Sunday, April 24th, 2022.

Will Pablo Carreno Busta continue his strong run this week as he aims to get himself on top of what many would say is a great win for a season where he has struggled? Will Carlos Alcaraz recover in time after such a tough semi-final just this morning and afternoon? Both players will know this is going to be a tough encounter, and the crowd are going to love this All-Spanish encounter. However, only one will be able to call themselves the 2022 Barcelona Open Champion. Who will it be?

Pablo Carreno Busta will be very thankful to the rain delays on Saturday which meant his semi-final match against Diego Schwartzman got postponed to Sunday morning. This is because he had to play 2 extremely long matches on the Friday, so he perhaps needed more time to recover and get to 100%, which is what he showed us on Sunday. Pablo came out strong right from the get go, making Diego pay for any short balls he received, and also being proactive and not letting Diego dictate, by coming into the net. Pablo needed this week at the 2022 Barcelona Open to give himself some extra confidence after a troublesome 2022 season, but he knows that the toughest challenge is yet ahead as he now meets Carlos Alcaraz.

Carlos Alcaraz had to fight for his life against Alex de Minaur in the semi-finals today, with the Spaniard not being at his best for the majority of the match, having to fend off some incredible tennis from the Australian. Alcaraz came into this match probably expecting a much easier match than what actually happened, especially after the amazing tennis which he displayed against Tsitsipas. However, with a lack of consistency on break points, and Alex raising his level in the tight moments, the match and first set went the way of the Australian. In the second set, it was the same story, with Alcaraz not converting many break points, and then Alex breaking him to serve for the match at 5-4, with Alcaraz then breaking back, and again with Alex breaking to serve at 6-5. Alex had 2 match points at 40-15 6-5 in the second set on his serve, but some amazing tennis from Carlos Alcaraz saw those points go in his direction, and the momentum helped him edge the tiebreak. Alcaraz then seemed to be in control of the majority of the third set, but we did see a doctor come check his foot at one point. It will be interesting to see how much Carlos has left for his Final match at the 2022 Barcelona Open as he now meets Pablo Carreno Busta.

Carlos Alcaraz and Pablo Carreno Busta have never met before, with this being their first career meeting at the 2022 Barcelona Open. Pablo will have some confidence coming into this match, especially after beating Diego Schwartzman in just an hour and 41 minutes. Carlos, on the other hand, had to fight for 3 hours and 43 minutes, which can have a toll with such a short turnaround in the same day. However, with such promise, expectation, and desire from the crowd to see the young Spaniard succeed, I think he will be fine with enough adrenaline to get him going. We did see some patchy tennis from Alcaraz at times, so perhaps Pablo can steal a set. However, at the end of the day, Carlos Alcaraz will continue to improve and get his 3rd big title of 2022 at the Barcelona Open.
