TennisSection previews the 2022 Miami Open as Jannik Sinner takes on Pablo Carreno Busta in the third round on Sunday, March 27th, 2022.
After surviving a real scare on Friday, Jannik Sinner knows the obstacles are only going to get significantly harder to overcome from this stage onwards. A meeting against the 17th seed Pablo Carreno Busta will serve as a barometer of Sinner’s title aspirations this fortnight.
Jannik Sinner defeated Emil Ruusuvuori 6-4 3-6 7-6 in a marathon second-round match at the Miami Open. Having beaten the Finn at last year’s edition of the tournament, and at the Citi Open later during the year, Sinner kept his unbeaten record over Ruusuvuori intact. But the Italian World No. 11 saved three match points in the final set tiebreak to seal an unlikely win. Ruusuvuori served for the match at 5-4 in the third, but could not contain his nerves as Sinner went for broke. Sinner put the finishing touch to an absorbing contest by planting a big forehand return on match point. The 20-year-old is looking to emulate last year’s heroics at this event when he reached his first Masters 1000 final (and lost to Hubert Hurkacz).
Pablo Carreno Busta, meanwhile, piled more misery on David Goffin with a routine 6-3 6-2 win at the Miami Open. The former World No. 7 Goffin is facing a lot of uncertainty regarding his form and fitness. Carreno Busta did not face a single break point in the match and won 76% first serve points in the match. The Belgian is clearly struggling for to restore some much-needed confidence after a string of early losses this season. His ranking is cascading down at a faster rate than we imagined.
Pablo Carreno Busta leads Jannik Sinner 1-0 in their head-to-head. The Spaniard’s victory came on the indoor hard courts of Rotterdam in 2020. Sinner is a different proposition these days and is a much more formidable challenger on hard courts. But I am inclined to give Carreno Busta a shot in this one. Sinner only just returned from illness and rode his luck a few times in his match against Ruusuvuori. Carreno Busta is the typical baseliner that can frustrate opponents to the core. And if Sinner is not timing his ground strokes, he could fall victim to Busta’s possum style.
