Miami Open 2022: Diego Schwartzman vs. Thanasi Kokkinakis Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Miami Open as Diego Schwartzman takes on Thanasi Kokkinakis in the second round on Friday, March 25th, 2022.

World No. 16 Diego Schwartzman faces a tough opener at the Miami Opener against arguably the most challenging qualifier in the draw. The Argentine is set to lock horns with Thanasi Kokkinakis, a player who has enjoyed a career relaunch in 2022. Can Schwartzman put the brakes on Kokkinakis’ irresistible rise?

Diego Schwartzman is ranked inside the Top 20, at number 16. But on the evidence of his performances on hard courts this season, he is not playing anywhere near the level that his current ranking suggests. The Argentine has picked up over half of his 13 wins this season on clay courts of South America. He reached back-to-back finals in Buenos Aires and Rio during the Golden Swing, and had the misfortune of playing Casper Ruud and Carlos Alcaraz respectively and which ended in agony each time. Schwartzman will get another bite of the cherry against such opposition in the upcoming clay court swing in Europe next month, but he has a chance to rack up a few points at the Miami Open.

Thanasi Kokkinakis, for his part, has enjoyed a career renaissance in 2022. After spending years on the treatment table, Kokkinakis is past his injury nightmares and is playing tennis on a regular basis this season. The 25-year-old Australian has checked off a couple of massive achievements already. He bagged a first ATP title on his city of Adelaide. And just a few weeks later, Kokkinakis would hoist the Australian Open doubles title in Melbourne alongside Nick Kyrgios. Having re-entered the world’s Top 100, Kokkinakis is making another dash at the upper echelons of the game.

Diego Schwartzman and Thanasi Kokkinakis have not played each other on the ATP Tour. Friday’s match at the Miami Open will be their first official meeting. Kokkinakis, for me, has enjoyed a stellar year and is steadily climbing the rankings. His hard court record should hold him in good stead against the Argentine. Expect the Aussie to make it four wins in four at the Miami Open.
