Qatar Open 2022: Marton Fucsovics vs. Soonwoo Kwon Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Qatar Open as Marton Fucsovics takes on Soonwoo Kwon in the second round on Wednesday, February 16th, 2022.

Marton Fucsovics bounced back from his Rotterdam loss to Andrey Rublev, by beating Lloyd Harris at the Qatar Open. The Hungarian has now set up an intriguing matchup against the powerful South Korean Soonwoo Kwon, also a victor in his opener.

Marton Fucsovics tied his head-to-head against Lloyd Harris to 2-2 after producing a gutsy display to defeat the South African. Consequently, Fucsovics maintained his perfect record in first-round matches at the Qatar Open. He has not lost a single one of them since his tournament debut in 2019. Fucsovics had the antidote to Harris’ mammoth serving, taking the ball early and inside the baseline at times. That explains why the South African was limited to just a handful of aces and was broken twice decisively.

Soonwoo Kwon, meanwhile, reached the second round of the Qatar Open on his main draw debut. The South Korean dug out a 7-6 1-6 6-4 win over American qualifier Christopher Eubanks. In a tight first set in which there were no breaks of serve, it was Kwon who held his nerve in the tight break. But he was completely blown away by the sheer power of Eubanks’ ground strokes in the second set, dropping serve three times. Kwon though managed to compose himself and regroup as he fought back valiantly to take the decider with his lone service break in the match.

Soonwoo Kwon leads Marton Fucsovics 1-0 in their head-to-head. That match was played on the grass courts of Eastbourne just before Wimbledon last season. Kwon won that one in three tight sets. The South Korean has got a solid baseline game and his inside out forehand is a shot of beauty. Fucsovics will need to avoid playing balls into Kwon’s strike zone because they will be unreturnable. The 24-year-old Kwon is yet to win back-to-back matches this year, but now would be the perfect opportunity to change that at the Qatar Open.
