TennisSection previews the 2022 Argentina Open as Fabio Fognini takes on Federico Delbonis in the quarterfinals on Friday, February 11th, 2022.
Will Fabio Fognini get the win? Will Federico Delbonis pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where an Italian veteran takes on a crowd favorite. Who will move on to the semifinals at the 2022 Argentina Open?
Fabio Fognini hasn’t been playing too great lately, which is likely a mix of covid, his age, along with his general mental demeanor, which was never particularly positive. He has a real tough one ahead of him against Federico Delbonis, who is looking to be in top shape on the South American clay. Fognini of course has a chance to win, but I don’t see him pulling through as Delbonis is a relatively consistent clay courter, while Fognini lacks current form. Let’s see if he can manage to get past this tough test and into the last four at the 2022 Argentina Open.
Federico Delbonis got a solid win to set up a meeting with the fiery Italian in Fabio Fognini. I think he will pull off the upset, Fognini can play great tennis on every surface, but to think he will defeat Delbonis at this point is foolish. Delbonis is a consistent player, and with the way that Fognini is playing right now, Delbonis will simply out-consist him in the end, but I do think he will need a battle to book himself a spot in the final four at the 2022 Argentina Open.
Fabio Fognini and Federico Delbonis have played eight times before, with Fabio Fognini leading the head to head 5-3. Their meetings go back 9 years, with Fognini obviously leading the series. 7 of their 8 meetings have come on outdoor clay, with one coming at Wimbledon. Their most recent meeting and the most accurate metric to determine the winner here came at Roland Garros last season, with Delbons shoving Fognini aside in straight sets. I expect Delbonis to tough this one out in the end, but I don’t think he’ll take it easily as he aims to reach the semifinals of the 2022 Argentina Open.
