Rotterdam Open 2022: Andrey Rublev vs. Soonwoo Kwon Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Rotterdam Open as Andrey Rublev takes on Soonwoo Kwon in the second round on Thursday, February 10th, 2022.

Andrey Rublev avoided the first-round humiliation that seemed to follow a number of high-profile seeds at the Rotterdam Open. The Russian came through safely and now faces South Korea’s finest in Soonwoo Kwon in the second round. Will the defending champion extend his winning streak?

Andrey Rublev made it six wins on the trot at the Rotterdam Open with a first-round win over Henri Laaksonen. Rublev’s grasp on the Rotterdam title has never been firmer. And on a day when three of the top eight seeds departed, there was a sense of anticipation emanating around the top two seeds in Tsitsipas and Rublev. The Russian did not really know what to expect from Laaksonen, the Swiss qualifier, having never faced him before at any level. And Rublev admitted to ringing countryman Medvedev for some insight knowing that the pair of them played each other in the first round of the Australian Open. And the second seed did his work with distinction as he won 27 of 33 first-serve points en route to 6-4 6-4 victory.

Andrey Rublev will now face Soonwoo Kwon of South Korea in the second round of the Rotterdam Open. The 24-year-old Kwon is building on an impressive breakthrough on the ATP tour from 2021. Kwon has risen to become one of the biggest tennis stars from South Korea as he engineers a move inside the world’s top 50 for the first time. And he gave that goal a major boost with an opening-round win over Hugo Gaston. Gaston was late replacement of Arthur Rinderknech who pulled out at the last-minute due to injury, taking his place as a lucky loser. And Kwon made sure the French lefty wouldn’t go any further by securing six service breaks.

Andrey Rublev and Soonwoo Kwon are yet to play each other on the ATP Tour. Thursday’s match will be their first official meeting at tour-level. Kwon has never advanced past the second round at any tournament this season. This was always going to be a difficult year for him to replicate what he achieved in 2021. While it is still early doors, I do expect the South Korean to have much better days during the course of the season. Right now, he is not in Rublev’s league.
