David Goffin’s injury-ravaged 2021 season still had a chink of sunlight. The Belgian won his fifth career title in Montpellier last year. But remarkably, that success precipitated a doom cycle of just seven main draw wins in the next six months, and his campaign coming to a premature end shortly after his first-round defeat to Mackenzie McDonald at the US Open. He appeared to have put his injury nightmare behind him at the start of 2022, but a retirement in the quarterfinal of the Sydney Classic posed more questions than answers regarding his long-term physical issues. Goffin, a former World No. 7 has seen his stock fall rapidly as a result of his inability to defend his title in Montpellier this past week. He has now exited the world’s Top 50 for the first time in eight years. Can he Belgian reignite his second coming at the Rotterdam Open?
Alex De Minaur is a nightmare opponent for David Goffin especially when you factor Goffin’s mobility right now. De Minaur is one of the most agile tennis players in the world and has an incredible get owing to his extraordinary running. That means he is going to squeeze a lot of ounces from Goffins’ feeble knees which are not operating at 100%. The Australian should be a massive favorite to progress into the second round of the Rotterdam Open.
Alex De Minaur leads David Goffin 2-0 in their head-to-head. One of those matches was a Davis Cup singles rubber on an indoor hard court where the Australian won in straight sets in 2019. De Minaur will be playing for the first time since reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open, but he is unlikely to have trouble adjusting to the new surroundings at the Rotterdam Open. This is possibly the best time to be facing Goffin, who is clearly hampered physically.
