TennisSection previews the 2022 Cordoba Open as Sebastian Baez takes on Fernando Verdasco in the Round of 32 on Tuesday, February 1st, 2021.
Will Sebastian Baez get the win? Will Fernando Verdasco pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have the young Schwartzman-like Argentine taking on a Spanish veteran. Who will move on to the Round of 16 at the 2022 Cordoba Open?
Sebastian Baez has been playing some great tennis as of late. The 21 year old Argentine is coming to Cordoba from Australia like most players after a tough loss to top player Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second round. He took a set off the Greek and put on an inspired performance, ripping groundstrokes and serving quite well for his size, standing at only 5’7 tall. He has a good shot to the next round as he takes on Fernando Verdasco, an excellent player at his best but since has fallen off the top of the circuit, not being able to stay with the younger guys anymore as he nears the end of his career. Let’s see if Baez can take advantage and move on to the Round of 16 at the 2022 Cordoba Open.
Fernando Verdasco is most certainly nearing the end of his career, not playing many tournaments and many of the ones he does being challengers. He has a tough road ahead of him if he wants to get past Sebastian Baez. Verdasco is a great clay courter, and is famous for his extremely high level of tennis against Rafael Nadal in one of the greatest matches of all time down under. He isn’t playing well anymore though, and with the confidence Baez has, I expect him to grab the win and move through to the Round of 16 at the 2022 Cordoba Open.
Sebastian Baez and Fernando Verdasco have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. Baez plays a good game to defeat Verdasco, he hits hard through the ball and can stay in the rallies, Verdasco always played more of a Nadal-like game, but to execute that style in his state is too much to ask for. I think Baez will overpower him in all aspects of the match, staying consistent and jumping on opportunities to book his spot in the last 16 here at the 2022 Cordoba Open.
