Will Benjamin Bonzi be able to cause an upset against the very experienced and defending champion here in Montpellier? Will David Goffin make the most of the wildcard he was awarded to defend his title here as he aims to find his tennis again after having a terrible last 12 months? Both players will be determined and will have their reasons to give it their all, but only one will make their way to the second round of the 2022 Montpellier Open. Who will it be?
Benjamin Bonzi has been playing well to start his 2022 season, making some good moves on the main tour, winning 2 matches this year, one in Adelaide and 1 at the Australian Open. Benjamin is now in the top 100 in the world and he is definitely working hard to make more of a name for himself. Bonzi was not really known as he is mainly a challenger tour player, but he is determined to get something going on the main tour this year as his ranking as risen. Here at home, at the 2022 Melbourne Open, Benjamin will know he will have the crowd behind him. However, he will have to play well as he meets the defending champion David Goffin.
David Goffin has been struggling a lot recently with his form, having had a terrible 2021 season where he did not find his form and he just felt like every time he stepped on court he could never find his rhythm. Goffin is a great player on his day and when he is ready to play, he can beat the best players in the world. However, having lost 3 out of his 5 matches this year, only beating players such as Bagnis and Kudla, something is still not right. Goffin will come out here hoping that he can find his best tennis again, as he did last year here at the Montpellier Open, which saw him win the title. However, he meets a tough opponent in Benjamin Bonzi right away.
David Goffin and Benjamin Bonzi met 1 time before, with David Goffin leading the head to head 1-0. They met last year here at the Montpellier Open in the second round, and David scraped through that match in 3 sets. Since then, Goffin has gone downhill in form and he has been terrible in every tournament he has played in. With this form, as well as some injury issues which saw him struggle in Australia, I don’t think Goffin has a chance to defend his title. I think that the crowd, as well as the fact that Bonzi is making a name for himself, will give the Frenchman the edge.
