TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Stefanos Tsitsipas takes on Taylor Fritz in the Round of 16 on Monday, January 24th, 2021.
Will Stefanos Tsitsipas get the win? Will Taylor Fritz pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have the Greek No. 4 taking on the top American who is in great form. Who will move on to the quarterfinals at the 2022 Australian Open?
Stefanos Tsitsipas got a shaky win over the erratic Frenchman Benoit Paire, taking him down 6-3 7-5 6-7 6-4. He got a little lucky in the end, and for the most part didn’t play that great. He missed a lot of easy balls, failing to hit approach shots and constantly hitting the net at totally needless moments. His serve though was incredible, serving one of the highest ace counts in a match in his career. He will have a very tough one against Taylor Fritz who is in superb form, but ultimately his experience and his more consistent game will get him the win as he aims to continue his campaign through to the quarterfinal here at the 2022 Australian Open.
Taylor Fritz got a sensational win over RBA, taking him down in 5 sets and solidifying his position at the top of the men’s game, proving to be a consistent top player. He was able to hit the ball extremely hard while also staying in the rallies, not to mention his brilliant serving. He has an incredibly difficult match ahead of him though as he has to take on the current world no. 4 Stefanos Tsitsipas. In order to defeat him, he will just have to go all out, attempting to bash his returns and making sure he doesn’t miss a lot of first serves. He has a chance, but it will be a tough ask as he aims to make into his first grand slam quarterfinal at the 2022 Australian Open.
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Taylor Fritz have met twice before, with Stefanos Tsitsipas leading the head to head 2-0. Their two meetings both came in 2019, when Tsitsipas was playing incredibly well and Fritz was nowhere near the player he is today. Fritz was still able to take a set off him then, showing that he can be a good matchup against Stefanos. Fritz hits hard, and Tsitsipas is not the best power absorber in the game, if Fritz can also hit his crosscourt backhand really well, I might favor him considering Tsitsipas didn’t look good in his third round match, nor in his second round. Tsitsipas though just has too much experience and considering his accolades compared to Fritz, I think he will ultimately put this one to bed as he aims to reach the quarterfinals at the 2022 Australian Open.
