TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Felix Auger-Aliassime takes on Marin Cilic in the Round of 16 on Monday, January 24th, 2021.
Will Felix Auger-Aliassime get the win? Will Marin Cilic pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have the no. 1 Canadian in good form taking on the Croatian legend who just got an incredible upset. Who will move on to the quarterfinals at the 2022 Australian Open?
Felix Auger-Aliassime got a very good win over Dan Evans, showing a huge improvement from his first two rounds where he had quite the scare. He does not have an easy one ahead of him in Marin Cilic, who pulled off a big upset over No. 5 seed Andrey Rublev. FAA can be very inconsistent, he is obviously favored over Cilic but the match will be close, both players can be mentally inconsistent, especially FAA, so I think we will be in for a long battle, with FAA coming out on top simply due to age and current results. Let’s see if he can pull this one off and book himself a place in a third consecutive grand slam quarterfinal at the 2022 Australian Open.
Marin Cilic got a shocking upset over Andrey Rublev, defeating him in 4 sets. He was able to serve incredibly well, troubling Rublev and not allowing him to play his game. FAA plays a different kind of game though, playing lots of first strike tennis, I don’t think he’ll be willing to get into too many long cross court rallies with Cilic, which is in my eyes what he has to do to draw errors from Felix, since Cilic can be more consistent most of the time. FAA will simply outplay him in the end though, due to his fitness and being able to serve bigger for a lot longer. Let’s see if he can manage the tricky opponent and progress to the final 8 at the 2022 Australian Open.
Felix Auger-Aliassime and Marin Cilic have met 3 times before, with Marin Cilic leading the head to head 3-0. Cilic leads their head to head quite convincingly, even beating him last year, unsurprisingly it was in a final where FAA lost in straight sets. Those kinds of occurrences really make it hard to predict some of his matches, as sometimes he will serve so big in the perfect moments, and he’s seemingly unafraid to go for his shots, but that doesn’t mean his nerves aren’t there, because they certainly are in rather great proportion. I do expect Auger-Aliassime to eventually pull out the win though and move on to the quarterfinals of the 2022 Australian Open.
